- How to Find Out About Ithaca-Area Events:
- Events in Syracuse (Good excuses for a Road Trip):
Please consider learning to dance. You will have lots of fun, and dancing boosts your confidence in social situations.
- One of our favorite swing dance teachers is Cindy Overstreet. She's thorough, funny, and gentle with beginning dancers. You will laugh as you learn!
- To learn about area swing dance events, see the Ithaca Swing Dance Network and join their Listserver. You'll find out about all the Lindy, East-Coast, and West-Coast swing events going in town, at Cornell, and throughout the U.S. On Cornell Campus the Cornell Swing Dance Club holds lessons & weekday hops, and collaborates with the Swing Dance Network on big on-campus dances.
- Another organization called Ithaca Dance
provides pointers to all known
Central New York Dance dance organizations and venues,
for all the different dance styles
(swing, latin, ballroom, etc.).
- There is a small but active Cajun/Zydeco dancing community here
in Ithaca. They don't have a web page, but you can join their Listserver by sending an e-mail
with your first and last name to Ed at
iczgighost@hotmail.com.
Once you are added to the Listserver, you'll receive e-mail from the
following Listserver account:
cczc-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
and you can find out about regional Cajun/Zydeco dances at the Rochester Cajun Zydeco Network web site. Note that Ithaca's Oasis Dance Club has Cajun/Zydeco bands playing every other Sunday afternoon.
- There is a small ballroom scene in Ithaca through Cornell - the Cornell Ballroom Dance Club sponsors lessons and dances during the Spring and Fall semesters. If you are willing to travel, then Bruce Heffron sponsors Ballroom dances at various Syracuse-area locations. Down in the Binghamton area, Tom Eurieck offers lessons and dances at his Fun & Dance Studio in Vestal, NY.
- There is a Latin (Salsa and Rueda) scene at the Oasis Dance Club on Tuesdays & Saturdays, and at Cornell Common Ground on Tuesday nights. On Cornell campus, Proyecto Pa'lante! teaches Salsa & Latin dancing, and also puts on monthly dances.
- Fans of Argentine Tango should check out the Ithaca Tangueros, who hold weekly dances + workshops.
-
Finally, the Dance Lovers of Central New York hold DJ'd social dances on the 2nd Friday of each month in Syracuse, NY. Dance styles include swing, latin, and ballroom.
-
New Ithaca Dance Scene - The Oasis Dance Club in Ithaca, NY has opened its doors in the former location of the Common Ground. They have an active dance schedule (latin, swing, cajun/zydeco) + a great dance floor. Their dance schedule is currently:
*Latin on Tuesdays 7PM-1AM & every other Saturday 8PM-1AM
*Live Jazz & Swing Dancing Fridays 6PM to 8:30PM
*College Night DJ'd Dance Party Fridays 9PM to 1:30AM
*Zydeco alternate Sundays 2-5PM
- Contra-Dancing is fun and is
much easier to learn than the partner dances. There is a
HUGE and friendly contra-dancing community in Ithaca, and their Friday
night dances are well attended - and there are usually more men
than
women. See
Tompkins County
Country Dances.
- There is also a separate
Ithaca-based contra-dance organization called
Hands For Dancers that
organizes special contra-dances that feature the best regional
musicians (including the renowned
Wild Asparagus) and some of the biggest crowds
(sometimes up to 200+ attendees).

- Ragman's Restaurant & Pub
- A1 Pizzeria and Family Restaurant (in Dryden - Italian/Greek)
Ithaca has an incredible range of activities - and the best way to find out about them is to read the Ithaca Journal (the daily newspaper), and the Ithaca Times (a free weekly paper you'll find all over town).
